At the end of March 2006, Carers Gloucestershire completed the change in its legal status to become a Company Limited by Guarantee. Under the Memorandum and Articles of Association to be able to influence the strategic direction of the organisation, through voting on resolutions etc. at Annual and Extraordinary General Meetings, you need to be a member of Carers Gloucestershire.

As a voting member of the organisation you will also be able to influence the appointment of Director Trustees.

Whilst membership is free, it does come with some responsibility. If the organisation was to be ‘wound up’ then members are each liable for a sum of money. However, this is limited to a maximum of £1.00 per member and is only payable in the event of the organisation closing. There is a legal document to sign for this but the process is not an onerous one.

It is important to note that being a member does not entitle you to special treatment in terms of access to services and support etc. Subject to ongoing funding, all of our services will remain available to Carers regardless of whether you are a member or not.

To become a full member of Carers Gloucestershire you must be over 18 years of age and have an interest, involvement or experience in Carers issues. Membership is subject to approval by the Board of Directors.

Membership runs from 1 April to 31 March each year so whenever you join you will need to renew your membership every March. We will write out to all members to remind them that there membership is up for renewal and invite them to renew it.

If you are interested in becoming a member you will need to complete an application form as well as a Membership Agreement and Guarantee. Your application will then be put forward to the Directors for approval. The full board meets every quarter, usually in January, April, July and October. Therefore the time taken to confirm your membership will depend on when in the year you submit your application. Our Annual General Meeting usually takes place in November.
